In a cowardly ambush perpetrated by those brazen enough to murder the household and Kin of the Holy Prophet and unwilling to face him Al Abbas (as) directly, they cut him to pieces with arrows, swords, stones and metal rods whilst hiding in wait behind trees. While Abbas (as) Attempted to reach the river Euphrates, cut off to the caravan of Imam Hussein by the army of Yazid, the greatest wound inflicted upon the Lion was the piercing of the goat skinned water bag, that would have quenched the thirst of his beloved Sukayna, Daughter of his brother Hussein.
Rushing to be by his side after the shameful ambush, Imam Hussein (as) gathers his brother into his lap. Held him and comforted him. Proclaiming “My back is now broken”.
Abbas pleads with his beloved master. “Please leave me here and do not take me back to the camp, I had promised Sukayna water and I have failed”. Imam Hussein cries, “call me brother, not master”. Abbas (as) slides his head off the lap of Hussein crying “my master you now cradle my head in your lap, but soon there will be no one left to comfort you”
Al Abbas (as) epitomised the very essence of bravery and chivalry and today remains an inspiration to Muslims world-wide. On the Day of Arbaeen and throughout the Arbaeen period. Millions of Muslims come to visit the heroic Abbas. They grieve for what befell him but more importantly they pledge to uphold his devotion and support for Imam Hussein.
